All atwitter: Art college will hold camp on social networking
To tweet or not to tweet?
That's the topic -- well, one of them, at least -- on tap for this weekend's SocialCamp at Memphis College of Art in Midtown.
The event, organized by local entrepreneurs and members of LaunchMemphis, is aimed at a wide range of participants, from digital neophytes to social networking gurus.
Participants will gather for a little Facebook time and many will tweet about it, but familiarity with social media is not a prerequisite.
"On one hand, we've got parents who are coming to learn more about Facebook and MySpace and Twitter as a way to keep track of what their kids are doing," said Dave Barger, one of the event's organizers and president and CEO of LunaWeb. "We've also got religious leaders who want to learn how to use social media to keep in touch with their congregations and business owners who want to maximize the use of social media to build their customer base."
The daylong event is being touted as an "unconference," Barger said, referring to the agenda's fluidity. A list of topics to be discussed will be provided, but some will be deleted and others added depending on the interest of the participants.
The program is ideal for novices, Barger said, because of workshops that will show beginners how to set up blogs and access and monitor social networking sites.
The event is a forum for advanced users, too, in that social media pros are encouraged to offer presentations on their areas of expertise.
"It's interactive and hands-on, pairing the novice with the experienced practitioner," said Eric Mathews, co-founder of Mercury Technology Labs and one of the program's coordinators. "It's user-generated and user-activated."
Organizer Lori Turner agreed.
"Participants get to spend time in workshops that are most meaningful to them, whether that's learning how to maximize a return on investment or sharing knowledge already acquired," said Turner, managing partner of RedRover Company. "The bottom line is that there will be takeaways for everyone."
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Memphis College of Art.
Cost is $40 and includes breakfast and lunch. An optional mixer is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Celtic Crossing, 903 S. Cooper.
