Coffee Break: Chamber's marketing event today

The Memphis Regional Chamber will host a sales and marketing summit from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at the Hilton Memphis, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd.

Featured speaker John Malmo will discuss marketing fundamentals. Other participants include Lori Turner from RedRover, Scott Williams from Elvis Presley Enterprises, and Lou Lambert from The Commercial Appeal.

    The event will also serve as the launch for the "Small Business Toolkit," offering resources to entrepreneurs and small-business owners about finance, accounting, marketing, human resources, legal issues and international business.

    The new program is a partnership between IBM and IFC, the private-sector arm of the World Bank, and is designed for minority- and women-owned businesses.

    Cost is $75 for members and $125 for guests. Parking is free.

    Bunco for Ave Maria

    The first Big Bunco Bonanza fundraiser to benefit Ave Maria will be Thursday in Heffernan Hall at Christian Brothers High School, 5900 Walnut Grove.

    Ave Maria in Bartlett is a long-term care facility that includes a nursing home, adult day care, assisted-living facility and dementia unit.

    Registration for the event starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by bunco instructions for beginners. Games get under way at 7:30 p.m.

    Cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

    Filing deadline nears

    Time is running out for Social Security and VA benefits recipients who may be eligible for a stimulus payment, but have not filed a 2007 federal income tax return to claim payment.

    Deadline is Oct. 15.

    Free return preparation will be offered for those who normally are not required to file but are filing this year only to claim the stimulus payment.

    Locations are:

    YWCA, 766 S. Highland, Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    New Zion M.B.C., 1210 College, Oct. 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Alpha Omega Veterans Services, 1183 Madison, Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    New Chicago Community Development Corp., 1036 Firestone, through Oct. 15, by appointment, 543-0468.

    Filers should bring photo ID or other identity document, verification of Social Security number, Form 1099 or a benefits statement showing Social Security or VA benefits received in 2007 (or the amount received if no statement is available), and proof of any other income.

    Filers must have received at least $3,000 in wages, tips salary or other qualifying income, which may include Social Security benefits, VA benefits, Railroad Retirement or nontaxable combat pay.
